Before this weekend, Stacy Lewis had played in eight events since the calendar turned to 2014. Out of those eight events, she finished sixth or better in seven of them. She finished second three times and third once but that first win of the season seemed to elude her week after week. Event number nine was the one that finally got her over the hump and back into the winners circle as the Palm Beach Gardens resident won the North Texas LPGA Shootout.

Going back to last year, Lewis had a total of six runner up finishes in her last 16 starts on Tour. A final round 64 on Sunday in North Texas assured her that she would not get her seventh as she ran away with the event to win by six shots. The six shot victory was the largest on the LPGA Tour since Jiyai Shin won the 2012 Women’s British Open by nine shots.

After an opening round 71, Lewis shot the next three rounds in the 60’s including 64’s on Friday and Sunday to earn her ninth career LPGA Tour victory and her first since last year’s Women’s British Open.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. I kind of have these mini goals in the back of my mind,” Lewis said. “One of them was kind of taking a tournament and running away with it. … So to be so close the last few weeks and then to come out and shoot 64, I mean I don’t even know what to say.”

The win keeps her at the top of the Race to the CME Globe standings and also boosts her up to second in the World Rankings. Fellow Palm Beach Gardens resident Michelle Wie continued her impressive 2014 by firing a Sunday 67 to finish third. The third place finish puts her one spot behind Lewis in the Race to the CME Globe standings.
