It might have taken 59 weeks, but Stacy Lewis is back on top of women’s golf. Lewis won the ShopRite LPGA Classic on Sunday to not only widen her gap as the top American golfer, but also to take back over the reigns as the number one golfer in the world on the women’s side.

The Palm Beach Gardens resident fired a 4-under 67 on Sunday to win by six shots and get her second LPGA Tour win in as many months. As a result, she took over the number one spot in the world rankings from Inbee Park who had held the honor for the past 59 weeks.

“It feels great,” Lewis said. “I feel like I’ve played a lot of good, consistent golf over the last year and I felt like I deserve to be here. I didn’t feel like I stumbled into it.

Shooting two rounds of 67 with a Saturday 63 sandwiched in the middle, Lewis won comfortably and her three day total of 16-under par was one stroke off the tournament scoring record that was set by Annika Sorenstam in 1998 and again in 2005. She also joins Sorenstam, Juli Inkster, and Betsy King as the only multiple winners of the ShopRight LPGA Classic after she also won the event in 2012.

Lewis has been on a tear since last August and some would argue that she is playing the best golf of her career. Since winning the Ricoh Women’s British Open at St. Andrews last August, Lewis has played in 19 events. In those 19 events, Lewis has only finished outside of the top 10 once, at this years Kingsmill Championship when she finished in a tie for 12th. In addition she has racked up six runner up finishes as well as her two wins.

The consistency that she has shown on the golf course over the past 10 months has resulted in her ascent back to number one in the world and unlike last year, Lewis plans on making herself at home with that new spot.

“The last time it was taken away from me in an off-week when we weren’t even playing, so I’m definitely just not going to take it for granted and really enjoy it this time. Now I know all the extra things that come along with it. But I’m ready for it this time.”
