Rory Wins It All in Dubai

There were some that thought Rory Mcllroy had no business even being in the Race to Dubai, the European Tour’s season ending playoff run. After all, his mid season foot injury prevented him from playing in the minimum 13 European Tour events required to be eligible for the playoffs.

On Sunday though, at Jumeriah Golf Club, Rory silenced everyone, winning the DP World Tour Championship and with that, the season long Race to Dubai.

It wasn’t just those who thought that Rory should not have been eligible. There were a lot of people who considered 2015 a lost season for Mcllroy because of his injury and the fact that he wasn’t much of a factor at the majors.

While Mcllroy didn’t have quite the on course success that both he and us have grown accustomed to, his win Sunday was his third of the season on the European Tour. He won the Dubai Desert Classic back in January and the WGC Match Play in March.

Heading into the final round Sunday, Rory had the Race to Dubai all but locked up. That was the exact opposite situation for the tournament though.

Mcllroy trailed third round leader Andy Sullivan for most of the front nine. Heading to 17 though, Rory had built up a two shot lead. That was until he hit his tee shot into the water on the par 3 17th. Rory limited the damage though, draining a 40 footer for bogey and keeping the one shot advantage that he ultimately won by.

”In hindsight, I probably should have gone with a different club and a different shot,” McIlroy said. ”It’s definitely probably the longest putt I’ve ever made for a bogey. I don’t think there’s been one that’s come at a better time. So, yeah, definitely the best bogey of my career.”

Rory has now finished atop the European Tour standings for the second straight year and third time since 2012.

”To be European No. 1 for the third time in four years, that was a goal of mine at the start of the year. It was a goal of mine in the middle of the year and it was definitely a goal coming into these last few weeks,” he said.
