Matt Kuchar, J.B. Holmes, and Rickie Fowler were named to the United States Ryder Cup team Monday in a move that surprised little and brings the team one step closer to being finalized. The three join the eight automatic qualifiers that were locked in before the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

While the European side has had their entire team set for a few weeks now, Captain Davis Love III and the American side made three of their four captain’s selections the day after the BMW Championship after the selection process and timing was modified after the debacle at Gleneagles in 2014. Love went with Ryder Cup experience over fresh faces with the first three captain’s selections in choosing Kuchar, Fowler, and Holmes.

For Fowler, this will be his third Ryder Cup appearance, but first on home soil. He compiled an 0-3-5 record during American losses in both 2010 and 2014, and has played the most matches in Ryder Cup history without recording a single victory.

Kuchar, the Olympic bronze medalist, will be making his fourth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance. While he hasn’t won on the PGA Tour in two years, he has had a bevy of top-5 and to-10 finishes, including the bronze medal in Rio. He also has one of the better Ryder Cup records having gone 2-1-0 four years ago at Medinah.

Holmes is the only member of the three to ever be on a winning Ryder Cup team. Holmes was a captain’s pick for Paul Azinger the last time the Americans won a Ryder Cup at Valhalla in 2008. In fact, Holmes has represented the U.S. in the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup as an amateur, along with the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup as a professional. The American team won each of the four times that he has participated.

Love will make his final selection at halftime of the Sunday Night Football game on September 25th between the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys. 12 Americans are competing in the Tour Championship next week at East Lake who are not currently on the team, including Bubba Watson, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger, and Ryan Moore.
