Jordan Spieth Finishes Off Historic Season With FedEx Cup Title

Over the past few weeks of the FedEx Cup playoffs, it seemed like Jordan Spieth’s historic season was going to end on a sour note. He missed the cut in the first two FedEx Cup playoff events and though he finished T13 at the no cut BMW Championship didn’t look comfortable on the golf course at times. All of a sudden, the conversation went from Speith being the clear cut player of the year to “Can Day take the POY from Spieth if he can win the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup?”

Spieth quieted all the chatter at the Tour Championship though, taking the FedEx Cup title and ending one of the most historic seasons in PGA Tour history on a high note. He won on Sunday by four shots despite saying he didn’t feel 100% comfortable with some of his shots this week.

“I didn’t feel comfortable striking the ball,” Spieth said after his round. “I didn’t have a go-to shot. It was amazing that we competed.”

After it looked as if Henrik Stenson was going to run away and hide with the Tour Championship on Thursday and Friday, Spieth got himself into the final pairing for Saturday and slowly chipped away at Stenson’s lead, finding himself one clear of Stenson as the final putt dropped on Saturday.

On Sunday, Spieth did what he has done so well during the 2015 season, drain clutch putts in crunch time as he began to extend his lead.

On the par 5 9th it seemed almost certain that Stenson was going to gain a shot back when Spieth stood over a 20 footer for birdie after Stenson had already tapped his in. Spieth drained it, just like he had done all year. Same thing on the par 3 11th. This time though, it was a 45 footer for birdie that Spieth drained. At that point, it seemed like nothing was going to stop Spieth from throwing the exclamation point on his 2015 season.

“It’s been a phenomenal year for him,” Stenson said after a 72 to tie for second. “I watched it firsthand at the first two rounds at Augusta, and he played phenomenal and putted phenomenal. And it was the same putting display, really, today – just an exhibition on the greens, to be honest. His putting and mental focus is the best in the world. It’s hard to argue that.”

The number of accolades and awards Spieth earned in 2015 is extensive. At 22, Spieth earned $1 million for every year he has been alive in 2015 making him the first $22 million man in PGA Tour history. In addition to winning the FedEx Cup, Tour Championship, Player of the Year, and money titles, Spieth also locked up the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average. All in all, it’s a 5 win season that included 2 majors and a FedEx Cup title for the young gun.

“This is one I cannot wait to celebrate,” Spieth said.

Spieth also takes back the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, a spot that has been a revolving door as of late.
