Jimmy Walker Wins Par 3 Contest as Records Fall

The annual par-3 contest the Wednesday before the start of the Masters has become as big of a tradition as the Masters itself, but for a different reason.

While the Masters is very serious, the par-3 contest has a much more laid back vibe the day before the tournament gets underway. It’s a day where the old and young get together and enjoy playing Augusta’s nine hole par-3 course. Past champions and current players walk the fairways and it is not uncommon to see players kids or grand kids even walking around in mini caddie jumpsuits. We were reminded yesterday that even when the best in the world are out having fun, they are still the best in the world for a reason.

Jimmy Walker won the par-3 contest, shooting a course record 8-under 19 on the nine hole layout. He finished three shots better than Keegan Bradley and 1982 Masters winner Craig Stadler. His round consisted on six birdies and a hole-in-one on the second hole. His hole-in-one was one of nine made on the day, also a new record. The previous record had been five, and yesterday’s event blew that out of the water. Of the nine aces on the day, the two highlights were 80 year old Gary Player becoming the oldest to make a hole-in-one and Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler recording aces on back-to-back shots on the fourth hole.

Walker will now try to break the curse of the Par-3 contest winner. Since the inception of the event, nobody has won the Par-3 contest and gone on to win the Masters in the same year.
