Hi Haters: Fowler Gets Second Win of 2015

Prior to the 2015 season, Rickie Fowler got a lot of heat from the golf critics out there. A marketers dream, Fowler had quickly become one of the top names in golf despite having only one PGA Tour victory. In fact, an anonymous poll came out and it named Fowler one of the most overrated names in the game.

Since that poll, Fowler has become one of the more dominant players week in and week out with the exception of Jordan Spieth. Fowler came from behind and played like a mad man on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass to win The Players Championship in impressive fashion.

Fowler can now add an impressive worldwide victory to his arsenal as he continues to quiet his critics.

Ricky played his final four holes in 3-under par on Sunday to come from behind again and win the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open by one shot over fellow American Matt Kuchar and Raphael Jacquelin.

Fowler never held the lead at any point until he tapped in for birdie on the 72nd hole after sticking his wedge shot from 109 yards out.

“I had to really dig deep, made some good swings coming in … and saved the best swings for last,” Fowler said.

While all the big talk right now is the 1-2 punch of Jordan Spieth and Rory Mcllroy, Fowler is trying his best to get his name in the conversation. Last year, he finished in the top five in all four majors. Now, he has two wins of his own in 2015.

“I can definitely get used to having more of these,” Fowler said, looking at the trophy.

The finish at the Scottish Open was very similar to his finish at The Players. He went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie on the last four holes at The Players to force a playoff in the greatest finish in the 34-year history of the TPC Sawgrass.

Across the pond, he reacted to a bogey on No. 14 to go birdie-birdie-par-birdie.

“Very similar to down the stretch at The Players,” Fowler said. “Worked out just fine.”

Fowler now heads to The Open Championship next week with a lot of confidence as he looks for his first major championship at St. Andrews.

“To win on a links golf course, my favorite style of golf, in Scotland and the week before the Open and going to St. Andrews, the Home of Golf is great timing,” he said. “I like my chances.”

The final pairing of Jacquelin and Daniel Brooks were no match for Fowler’s back nine run, but they don’t leave completely empty handed so to say. The Scottish Open awarded three spots in the Open Championship to the top four finishers that were not already qualified. Jacquelin and Brooks earned two of those spots while the final one went to Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg.
